RETOUR AUX VILLAGES de Provence

Originally a Celto-Ligurian site, Regussia was occupied by the Romans. From the 11th century onwards, Regusse became an important center of the Templar Order. Following the dissolution of this order, the Seigneury of Regusse passed into the hands of the Hospitallers of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.

The commandery of Saint Maurice, built in the commune near the lower gorges of the Verdon, is constructed of ashlar. A house, an annex, a sheepfold and a chapel can still be seen today.

Regusse is home to numerous remains from medieval times.

– The eastern gateway to the Templar castle at the corner of Rue des Castellane and Place de l’Horloge.

– Windmills dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, one of which is still in use today thanks to restoration work carried out in 1995.

– The towers of the Château des Grimaldi, from which, according to legend, an underground passageway led discreetly to the west of the village. Originally, the Château des Grimaldi had four towers. Only two remain.

– The clock tower.

– The northern ramparts are very well preserved. One part dates back to the 12th century, while the other with battlements and loopholes was built in the 16th century by Charles de Grimaldi.

– The large arches are remnants of the château’s former stable gates, and are accessed through an imposing portal.
– Notre Dame de la Miséricorde church, originally Romanesque, has been transformed over the centuries. Its characteristic square bell tower is topped by a polychrome-glazed spire.

Like all the villages of Provence, it’s great to stroll through the shady streets and follow in the footsteps of the Templars…
